An Overview of Pinot Noir

Within the world, there are believed to be over 10,000 varieties and types of wine.  From all the varieties of wines, there are a few which continue to show up on the best seller list year in and year out.  One of these wines is the Pinot Noir, which has long been a popular wine, and has grown even more so over the last ten years.

In order to be on a top selling list, there are a few factors which need to be in place.  One of these factors is the ability to have this wine produced across a large swath of vineyards around the world.  The Pinot Noir grapes are grown mostly in France, along with other vineyards in California and Oregon, as well as South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and Australia.  Because of the large amount of areas where this grape is grown, it can be produced in a large assortment of ways with varying amounts of alcohol and sweetness.

Even with this being the case, it is not more wildly produced because the grapes themselves are very fragile and difficult to work with.  The skin around the grape is very thin, making it very susceptible to climate change.  The grapes grow in clusters, and within those clusters there are very few which are 100% pure throughout the entire cluster.  There are certain to be some grapes which have not ripened correctly, or have gone rotten.  This can be a very pain staking process to ensure all the grapes which go into fermentation are of the highest quality, as even just a few bad grapes can spoil an entire wine making process.

One of the unique traits and qualities of the Pinot Noir grape is how easily it is able to be cloned and the amount of mutations that the grape can go thru.  Just within the country of France, the believed birth place of the Pinot Noir, there are close to 50 recognized and approved mutations of the Pinot Noir grape.  Of the other wines which are considered to be the highest made by volume, this more than doubles any other approved and recognized mutation of any other grape.

Pinot Noir is a strong, Red wine which has a complexity of flavors.  The younger the wine is, the lighter color it is and the more the fruits of the wine are noticeable; most notably the strawberries, cherries and raspberries.  As the wine becomes older and the grapes are allowed to mature, the less the levels of fruit are apparent, the darker red the wine becomes and the more the tannin which is added in becomes apparent.  This tannin agent is what gives the wine a more dry taste to it, so the longer it sits, the drier the wine will taste.

Overall, Pinot Noir is among the top 10 grapes produced in the world and is one of the top 5 selling wines in the world.  It has been around for over 2,000 years, and continues to be a wine which can be enjoyed by all people, no matter their worldly status.  So the next time you want to enjoy a red wine which is rich in flavor and has a complexity of flavors, then there might not be a better choice than Pinot Noir.
